From 26 May – 16 June 2017, BCMA organized a competition for university students in Brunei to trade in stocks and bonds. The competition saw teams of up to four members each from various universities, invest with a virtual capital of B$1 million to achieve the highest returns over a three-week period from a universe of 100 pre-selected stocks and bonds in Singapore, Malaysia and the US.
The participating students were provided trainings on securities trading, which covered an overview of the various asset classes (such as equities, fixed income, ETFs, REITs), and an introductory session on asset allocation by Baiduri Capital and UOB Asset Management before the start of the competition.
The winning team from UNISSA was given a five-day attachment with Lion Global Investors in Singapore to learn about investment and fund management, whilst the four members in the runner-up team were given the opportunity for a three-month experiential work attachment with Baiduri Capital and BIBD Securities (2 members each).
The competition was organized with the support of the Capital Market Unit of the Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) in conjunction with the National Savings Day event in May 2017 with the objective to promote investment awareness and knowledge about capital markets with university students being the primary target audience.
